Internet Security

Posted by middlerage on October 12, 2011

A very short post so that I can put out two very important links on email security.

The first is a brief article from the muddledrambler about the subject, and the second link is a very long, but astonishing article from Atlantic Magazine. I hope you’ll take the time to read the Atlantic article because it is the inspiration for this post.

Your Most Important Password by the muddledrambler at coolness.universe

Hacked! by James Fallows at the Atlantic.

Our email matters. The cloud matters. And the password(s) we use matters. This post is about security, but let me make clear – I am not condescending to you. I identify with the Atlantic article hugely, and am passing along this info as one life raft occupant to another. I am way behind in updating my approach to passwords and I feel (frankly) overwhelmed.

I See Dead People. And Advertising.

Posted by middlerage on October 12, 2011

I almost always look at my blog login-ed*  and in edit mode. I recently had cause to look at my blog from a different machine and not logged in…just like you. What I saw was disturbing. The home page was normal, but when I went to specific posts, each one had a video advertisement appended to it.

I didn’t put those there!

Do my dear readers see them too????

If it is WordPress trying to make a little money off of me, well then, more power to ’em! They provide a nice blog platform and it has served me well. I don’t mind, it’s just that I didn’t know. They didn’t tell me.

If it is some nefarious hacking trick, then Egads!

I emailed a question about this to WordPress support, and have yet to hear back (it’s been a couple of days /finger-tapping).

Could it be that my blog is not hacked but the other computer is? If so, it is mind boggling awesome, because it somehow inserts the adverts right into the page.

*the muddledrambler hates the verb login, and prefers we all use log [space] in.

You Didn’t Pay Money for that Did You?

Posted by middlerage on October 10, 2011

The word of the day is Jaunty.

Recently I made another purchase on iTunes. Talking about music on a blog is a fool’s errand unless it is a blog devoted to music in some fashion, say criticism, review, a particular niche or band.  When I run into a music selection on a non-music blog, I am 99.99% never interested in the taste of the blogger and the music  is just a speedbump for me. It interrupts the flow of info gathering that I am engaged in.

However, in this case, it is so unlikely that my dear readers will like the musical selection that it is actually funny and worth putting out there. In fact, when my wife heard me download this and play it, she said, “You didn’t pay money for that,” (shudder), “did you?” This was followed by a roll of the eyes and a muttered, “You have weird taste,” as she stalked off to do something constructive.

But this song is just so jaunty and fun, and how can you not feel a perk in the step and a desire to do some serious yardwork? Two different videos of the same song, but the second video may explain why it’s stuck in your head. Enjoy:
