Music Fridays – Awesome Fun

Posted by middlerage on August 3, 2013

Like Jazz, Heavy Metal (or ‘meduhl’) can be parsed into a thousand sub genres. recently, I’ve fallen off the deep end for the sword and valkyrie, operatic and eyeliner, blazing arpeggios, straight ahead long hair and wrist bands Heavy Metal to be found on the awesome web station Black Diamond Radio.

I’ve been posting a lot of Jazz or eclectic type musics in Music Fridays, and while you may not like my selections, I never have to defend the music. Jazz has a certain intellectual cred that causes us to say, “well okay, not my cup of tea, but this middlerage dude must be an intellectual.”

With this post, it is tempting for me to indulge a bit of apologia; to say, “I know it’s camp but…”, or “When I just want some mind candy…”, or, “Remember I am a snobby intellectual, so…”

But that’s not fair. I think this is really good music, and I will let it stand or fall on its own merits. Just know I love it, and it deserves a place on my blog. My snobby intellectual self is flabbergasted by the finely honed craftsmanship. Dedicated to  Dahveed who shredded my ears and Fatman who whiplashed my neck.

And remember Heavy Metal never dies, it just moves to Europe.

Just the boot up the backside needed for a Monday morning! Thanks! I agree and harbor some love for this sort of metal too.

Thanks for that! Enjoyed it immensely. So I’m listening the Iron Savior track and thinking, “These guys sound straight out of the ’80s why have I never heard of them?” Apparently because they formed in ’96! Wow. I guess that’s the cool thing about Europe — the music scene is so segmented that even something like that has a place. The lyrics crack me up though — it’s like Tenacious D only with no irony. 😉 That Symphony X track was bad ass! Reminds me of a more melodic Watchtower. Maybe that makes them more like Dream Theater. I never would have guessed I would have liked Lordi, but they were alright. Probably a hell of a lot of fun to see live.

Lordi knocks it out of the park with that one. Alas, that’s about the only song of theirs I like. Thy’re interesting tho’ because they got their start winning the Eurovision contest in 2000-something. And they’re Finnish.
Your description of Tenacious D without the irony is funny and true. Occasionally blackdiamond plays Japanese heavy metal which has even less irony, if possible, and twice the sincerity. But I give them mad props for their sincerity.
