Music Fridays – The Sessioneers

Posted by middlerage on September 28, 2013

Dahveed has a nice highlight of session guitarist Andy Timmons over at his blog. A perusal of Timmons’ biography shows he has been a session musician for everybody from Kiss to Leann Rimes. Mad props to Dahveed for the discovery. Obviously a respected worker and puts me in the mind to think of backup musicians in general.

This gives me an opportunity to highlight a recent discovery for me from Booker T and the MGs. Booker et al were the studio band for legendary Stax Records, and everybody has heard them play their signature tune Green Onions. I am not going to play Green Onions. Even if you are seven years old and don’t know anything about music and believe you’ve never heard Green Onions, you’ve heard it. A fine song, but too ubiquitous for a post about discoveries. Instead, I’m gonna feature a fantastic funk number called Melting Pot, and follow up with another fave of mine – Time is Tight. These are the kind of instrumentals you just want to play on the microbus radio, roll down the windows and roll on down Highway 1.

And make sure to head over to Davheed’s blog for some Andy Timmons.

About 10 years ago, I went out on the wild Internet finding various covers of Green Onions. I must have listened to at least 30 renditions. And one of my favorites was by… you guessed it… Andy Timmons. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cznWsvpaOco
