Leaves

Posted by middlerage on July 9, 2014

Yes it has been quiet here. Been busy with  educational classes. Or lazy. It is July. However, there are two new posts over at my other blog ->

anyhoo, I was just thinking there sure are a lot of Nissan Leafs around here. Good environmentalism. The plural of Leaf as a proper noun is Leafs, right? One wouldn’t say Nissan Leaves?

This leaves me speechless:

‘Rollin’ Coal’ culture warriors want to douse your Prius with their smoke-belching trucks

Here We Go Again

Posted by middlerage on September 24, 2013

The IPCC, aka, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is just about to release the next round of pentennial assessment and review of the state of science on global warming. The last assessment was released in 2007.

So on September 30th, Working group I – the assessment of the physical science of global warming – will release their 5th report here: http://www.ipcc.ch/ to be followed next spring by the reports of Working Groups II and III (impacts and mitigation).

As Michael Oppenheimer (one of the scientists who has been in on IPCC assessments since 1990) said on NPR this morning – is it really of any use anymore? Each report is just a further refinement of the last one, and the confidence of each one doesn’t seem to be inspiring any real policy progress from governments.

In the intervening years we’ve had heavy weights like the US Air Force and the National Academy of Science join the it’s real, it’s happening crowd.  But that’s not good enough for Sen. Tom Coburn (R Okla) or Marc Rubio (R Flor) or…well… deniers are as old and numerous as the IPCC reports.

Let’s fade out with this post with a picture. In May of this year we surpassed 400 ppm of CO2 at Mauna Loa for the first time since measurements started in 1958 (for perspective, ice core measurements show CO2 below 300ppm for the 800kyr prior to the 20th century):co2_weekly_mlo
