Oh. My. God. The Gastronomy Version

Posted by middlerage on January 4, 2013

For some unfathomable reason, it seems two of my fellow bloggers – Harlean Carpenter, and the Muddled Rambler – felt I was deserving of having a surprise package of awesomeness appear on my doorstep today.

After an initial, “Huh? What’s this?” I sliced off the tape to reveal not one, not two, not three, not four, but FIVE holiday goodies of the homemade variety.

mmmmmrfff.snrffle.chomp.chomp.mgggmmm     smack!

Anyhoo… Jesus is the reason for the season, but JESUS, this stuff is good. Two of the five are chocolate candies good enough to be “store-bought.” (In today’s age everything is all about the ‘home-style goodness’, ‘just like mom used to make’, but remember when ‘store bought’ was the bees knees? – okay, maybe it’s an Appalachian thing, anyway… ) The casing, texture, solidity, firmness and uniformity are amazing. Who made this candy??? Harlean, that’s who.

Geez, buy a girl a new kitchen and she’ll go to town. It’s a wonder the Muddled Rambler doesn’t weigh 400lbs. There’s also eggnog cookies that taste JUST LIKE eggnog, and have the most amazing inner delicacy wrapped in the thinnest crispiness, it’s practically Japanese in their execution.

Meticulously packed next to the eggnog crisps are the richest, smoothest gingerbread cookies, dipped in cream cheese icing. AMAZING.

slaver.slaver.mmmmmm.ggggggg.chomp.chomp   slurp!

If this is how the new year is going to begin, man it’s my lucky year! Thumbs up from the whole family.

Completely unexpected. Wish you were here to share.

I Know People – Stormbringer

Posted by middlerage on October 11, 2012

Her full name is Stormbringer Bringer of Storms, and she is of acute interest to us in the Atmospheric Science fields. Seems every time she moves to a new part of the country (her sig oth gets transferred a lot), the new locale experiences record breaking weather: snowfall, tornadoes, wildfires, drought.

I’ve known Stormbringer since at least Highschool and she is a dear friend. She is my go-to for dishing on pop culture and TV shows. We all need an outlet, and while I use this blog to present myself as the world’s smartest scientist (ha!) and/or leftist political whiner (double ha!), I need my secret downtime with the opiate of the masses, i.e. TV. When I need to know what’s going on with a particular show I have an instant encyclopedia. Recommendations? Let’s just say that I had no interest in Breaking Bad until she made, MADE, me watch it. It instantly became my favorite, and I wasn’t even going to give it the time of day.

But it doesn’t stop there, Stormbringer is also an expert in geek culture. Comic cons? She’s there. Friday strategy game night? She’s there. Dungeon master? She’s there. Roasting green chile, and making killer enchiladas? She’s there. Wait, that’s not geeky?!? Anyhoo…

All that seems kind of pulpy, and low brow, and that’s why I love being friends with her. But I’m also proud of her. Here’s why – she happens to be director of the software division of a startup. How cool is dat? And for intellectual diversion she traces the adaptations of novels to screen or stage. AND out of some misguided sense that moss is growing upon her, she directs local theater. Geez, take a breath.

When I’m not being proud of her, I’m admiring her. Why? Because she lovingly stepped into the position of step mom for not one, but FOUR boys. I love my kids, but could I extend that love to people who are not the fruit of my loins? I don’t know. I do know I have a hell of a lot of respect for people who do. By the way, she and the father of said boys had, hands-down, the coolest wedding I’ve ever been to (bindings, elves, singing, costumes, fairie princesses, ogres, roast beast. Okay, it was heavily influenced by geek culture, but it was totally far out).

The thing about Stormbringer that I really want to highlight is her loyalty and non-judgmentalism. Once you are her friend, that’s it. No more questions. I get the sense I would have to be a bank robber AND a serial killer before she would waver in deeming me a friend (I exaggerate to make a point – Stormbringer doesn’t condone serial killing outside the confines of a board game.) Anyway, it is nice to know I have a friend I can both let my hair down with AND survive the zombie apocalypse with. She’s got my back, bitchezzzzzz.

The early part of October is Stormbringer’s birthday, so you can leave some good wishes in the comments section. This video is for her (and she knows why). Also check out the bonus take below for some mellow.
